Keeping your employee’s productive means creating an environment where they have FUN! In today’s competitive environment, business owners and managers need to create a FUN culture and environment to attract and retain top employees
Knowing that happy employees can make your company become more successful and make more money is one thing; implementing a “fun” initiative is another.
To put “fun” into your culture, start by recognizing it won’t happen on its own. It’s you, the owner or manager, who needs to implement a plan to have fun!
Come up with some fun or positive events plotted throughout the year, either monthly or quarterly.
If you are struggling to come up with ideas, create a “fun idea” committee or team(s) and let them bring ideas to you!
#1 Fun and Games Idea: Game Room / Fun Zone. This can be a relaxing area with a video screen or TV for viewing shows or movies. If room allows, have a pool table, foosball, ping-pong, darts, chess/checkers/backgammon tables. Even legos and puzzle tables relieve tension.
#2 Fun and Fluffy Idea: Pet-Friendly or Bring Your Pet to Work Day. Today, pets are like children to many people. Studies have shown that allowing employees to bring their pets to work reduces stress and makes employees feel more relaxed and comfortable. A pet-friendly workplace tends to increase employee satisfaction and improve morale. Employees of pet-friendly businesses tend to work longer hours and have fewer absences.
#3 Fun and Healthy Idea: Create a gym or workout facility within your business. Healthy employees create many advantages for your business. The synergy factor, employees seeing other employees getting and staying healthy, will encourage others to do so.
#4 Fun and “We’re Great” Idea: Celebrate Wins! Often, employees do not know how the company is doing as a whole. To create a “we are all in this together” attitude, let everyone know when something great or even something small has occurred. Then, do something to celebrate; have lunch brought in, cut everyone loose ½ hour early, etc.
#5 Fun and Creative Idea: Decorate your workspace. This can be the entire workspace or each individual employee’s workspace. If you decorate the entire workspace, choose timely themes and update them regularly. If you decorate individual workspaces, allow them a certain level of freedom. It only makes sense that if they are more comfortable, they will be more productive.
#6 Fun and Relaxed Idea: Casual Friday or Theme Friday. Depending upon your normal dress code, change can be good, and feeling less constricted can lead to more productivity.
#7 Fun and Fulfilling Idea: Provide breakfast or lunch. Some, especially newer companies (large and small), are providing breakfast and lunch for their employees – for FREE! Employees love this. If not every day, consider one day a week or one day a month.
#8 Fun and “Me” Idea: Bring your hobby to work. Allow employees to work for a short time (15 to 30 minutes) on a hobby.
#9 Fun and Funny Idea: Comedy, Jokes, Funny! It may be one of the best ways to energize your team. This can be accomplished on several levels. Have everyone bring a joke (keep it clean) and share on Monday mornings or Friday mornings! Create a “Stand-up Comedy or Karaoke half hour”.
#10 Fun and Dreams Idea: Create a Bucket List board. Invite employees to post something that is on their bucket list. Then, when they have fulfilled it – Celebrate!
#11 Fun and Worthy Ideas: Celebrate birthdays and work anniversaries. Once a month have cake and ice cream for the employees. After singing Happy Birthday, have each person share why they enjoy working here.
#12 Fun and Last Call Idea: At a set time each day (1 or 2 hours before closing time), play some music or a theme song. The intent is to give everyone a jolt as the day wears on and give them a last burst of energy to finish out the day!
