Stand Out from the Crowd

“If you want to stand out from the crowd, give people a reason not to forget you.”  – Richard Bronson, Virgin Group

Let’s give people a reason not to forget you! Remember,in today’s business world the competition is not just the like-businesses down the street or across town. It’s everywhere; the other end of the state, the country, and even the world!

According to Entreprenuer.com’s small business encyclopedia, a slogan is “a catchphrase or small group of words that are combined in a special way to identify a product or company,”

In a perfect world, your name clearly says what you do…names like TDS Auto Repair, Riddle’s Jewelry, or Flyboy Donuts.  If your current business name doesn’t say what you do, we are not suggesting you change your name. However, it’s not too late to develop and promote a slogan that will help you stand out in the crowd.

Tide’s slogan, “If it’s clean, it’s gotta be Tide”, says exactly what they what you to know.

The same for M&M’s, “It melts in your mouth – not in your hands”, and this slogan for a local auto parts store, “With Over a Million Different Auto Parts – Start with Sturdevant’s”.

Companies have slogans for the same reason they have logos. Logos are visual, while slogans are audible representations of a brand.  The best logos and slogans identify the business name before the name is seen or spoken.

Don’t Rely on Your Name Alone

The old days of simply keeping your name in front of the public, on its own, no longer works….particularly if your name doesn’t say what you do. There are simply too many names, too many competitors, and too much fragmentation for you to be remembered for your name alone.

The right slogan or logo, however, used consistently over time, can clearly differentiate you in your prospects’ minds and give you a competitive advantage.

“Just Do It!”  “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s ___________”.  “In fifteen minutes or less, you can save 15% or more”.  Powerful slogans build powerful brands.

In a study of more than 2,000 consumers, 82% of people searching for a business online would click on the first business they were aware of, or had a preference for, rather than click on the first name revealed at the top of the search engine page.  SOM (Share of Mind) is the best SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
